Sea View: Best seen large size.

Mumbai

I have been in Mumbai for 45 days but not really done Mumbai so to say, notwithstanding the Boat Show, the Vintage Car rally and Barcelona, which is not really Mumbai.

I plan to do Mumbai over the next few days. This morning I was out on Street Fighter at 05:30 hrs and headed to the Taj Mahal hotel. Got a few shot out there. The Gateway is under repairs.

Next was a by lane at the end of the road. I got the shot of the day here, in low water, of the Mumbai harbor inner bay and beyond to Karanja Island.

Next I skidded to the fish market to witness the auctions at the Sassoon Dock but no luck with pics. Very noisy auctions, but the docks vibrate with energy, the noisy tough Koli women fight hard to buy the fish. Plan to repeat that later.

Photographing inside the docks is forbidden. Maybe a good cell phone can beat the Security.

Let’s see what I get over the next few days. Will definitely skip Malabar Hill, the Queens necklace. Will look for lesser known nooks and corners.

Tribute to Ladakh: Best seen large

TRIBUTE TO LADAKH

She stands at “Savdhan” admiring the blazing blue skies and the mountains beyond. Tis a lonely road. It’s a kind of Magic. Ladakh! Leaves many brain dead. The call of the Mountain is strong. Nirvana.

She called last night from thousands of miles away…she talked Ladakh, Buddhism, Peace, Flags, this dung La that dung La. Strange. No golf. She’s an Alice in Chains for Ladakh.

It was a day in July, in the high mountain passes. Loneliness. Was it a dream?

Ladakh provokes thousand different thought to different people, in so many ways.

Blessed are the glaciers, the raging rivers, pristine treeless surroundings.

Tis so easy enjoying pics like this in front of my comp, laid back in comfort. How did I feel that day? BETTER coz Pappa was a Rolling Stone. The Solitary man and his Woman. Biking. Mountains. The meaning of Freedom.

Some of my young biker friends on Flickr go back again in again, the magnetism of Ladakh has that pulling power…. Lets Just Ride. Like Mani Babbar, Motographer. Will they ever stop? They are very talented with their cameras.

I can at best view my pics again and again. Tis the snapshot in the family album. The best there is, is Ladakh. No doubt.

Will I go there again? No. Choice one is Vegas. There is a beggar on Flickr who lives in USA. He is a guest of honor at Caesars Palace. I will deal the Jack of Diamonds to him on the table. Although the Clubs weapons are more.

The memory all fades now…..

The climb up is an awesome experience...the top was heavenly...though the densely forested trees were devoid of leaves, yet a stunner. Walk On...

Fastrack World sent me a pair of their recently launced Biker series shades, via a post on www.bikenomads.com , a bikers club very well known in India.

I have used them on a a few rides including a recent 140 kms ride from Pune-Pavana Dam-Lonaval-Pune, with BikeNomads......scroll down for the ride log.

The shades covers the eyes well side to side and totally cuts off the UV glare. I deliberately rode against the sun for 30 kms to see the effectiveness of the shades. The glare was effectively cut off and my field of vision was normal. There was no distortion. Besides I was surprised at speed of 80 kms per hour on my Pulsar 220, dust particles did not enter from the sides of the glasses.

Considering the cost of the shades @ below Rs 2,000/- Fastrack has a winner in the Biker series shades.

Did an early morning ride to Pavana....air was cool...got a great shot of the bike against the rising sun....

RECCE RIDE TO PAVANA

Early morning did a kick ass recce ride to Pavana Dam. . Started home 06: 20 hrs.

Departed Chandani Chowk 06:35 hrs. Reset trip meter to zero. I was late in starting by 20 minutes. Ripped the bike taking curves at 70, checked breakes, headlights, practiced countersteering …all fine with Street Fighter. Morning air was chilly, the setting awesome. Traffic thin, could rip bike on a few stretches.

Got a great view of the early morning civil twilight at Piranghut ghat turn off. The scenery of the hills was awesome…but pic got screwed up.

Rode down to Paud and could not locate the turn to Pavana. Asked a few people, no one knew. My last ride there was a few months ago …saw a conical hill feature and remembered that. Ripped the bike down Mulish road, past Paud, took a chance right turn, keeping the hill cone to my left. Navigation was bang on…I was on Pavana road. Found a beautiful river, took a few pics. Was surrounded on all sides by mountains, lush green agricultural farms, the rural setting was perfect. My type of country roads. Wanted to catch the sunrise, ripped up the rural roads….Oh la la found a beautiful lake…took a few pics of the lake with the rising sun. Distance from CC was on trip odo meter 34 kms, time 0715 hrs. Ripped the bike up a ghat and reached apex of the mountain, with Pavana Lake to the west and the rising sun to the east. Absolutely awesome setting. Got a few hurried shots.

I figured Pavana Lake further down some 15 kms. Turned back for CC. Reached CC at 09:00 hrs.

My observations for Saturday shoot:

1. Meet CC at 06:00 hrs. Start at 06:15 hrs sharp. NO DELAYS.

2. First stop Pirangut hill turn off, for few shots of Morning Civil Twilight.

3. Second halt at the bridge, for shots of the river.

4. Third halt at the lake to catch the sunrise.

5. Fourth halt at the apex of the mountaintop to take shots of Pavana back waters.

6. Last halt at Pavana dam.

Street Fighter against backdrop of Wai Hills

STREET FIGHTER, BIKES N WOMEN POWER AT WAI

09 DECEMBER 2007

I was looking to sign off Year 2007 with a Bike Ride. The opportunity came when P@P (Photographers at Pune, a flickr group) worked out a foto shoot at Wai 09 December 2007.

Medini my wife was also out playing a Golf tournament at the Pune Golf Course.

Pooja, Meghana and their frens Devina and Rajlaxmi met us at Chandani Chowk morning at 06:45 hrs. Pooja had a nice Wagon R. I was surprised to see my BikeNomads friend Praveen Shirali (Sportor) join P@P for his first outing with us. 4 other P@P riders were waiting for us at a hotel.

I mounted the Street Fighter and we all headed off to the Katraj Tunnel. I was ripping the bike at some 115 kph at every opportunity. We caught up with the others at a hotel. A quick breakfast, headlights on we headed for Wai. Disciplined riding and driving we reached Wai in good time. Pooja was pushing her Wagon R with the Women Power at a cool speed of 110 kmph, easy.

WAI

Nice temple, quaint old town and a movie setting by the river made for Wai. Now I am no photographer, I am more of a Motographer. You have to wait for techies like Srijith, Born Wanderer, and Pooja n Meghana to uplink their pics.

RETURN

The group just split up on the return run to Pune. At a point I was cruising alone. That gave me an opportunity to reminiscence the year gone by. The solo Ladakh ride, July 2007 with wife Medini some 2500 kms, was no doubt the greatest of the year, followed by riding solo to Hampi in Feb 2007, 1450 kms. The BikeNomads meet at Hampi Nov 2007 was another highlight of the year. I was fortunate to get accepted by Technically Sharp people of P@P. I attended 4 meets with them; the best was no doubt the Indian Air Force Fighter Flying shoot in May 2007. Got the opportunity to uplink vids at You Tube.

I had plenty of opportunities to rip SF. She took the curves nicely at 89/90, got flats to open throttle to max speed of 116, but cross winds did not permit me to achieve max speeds.

All in all a good year rounded up nicely with the Wai P@P shoot.

As I write this, wife called to say she won a prestigious Golf Tournament at the Pune Golf Club.

Ride to Wai. Kids I saw at a temple group foto.
